CALAMECCA

The fortified castle of Calamecca existed already around the 11th century, which was a stop for the travellers crossing the valleys of Pescia and Pistoia. The castle, demolished in 1182 by Pistoia as it has rebelled against their domination, was rebuilt during the 13th century. Today the castle preserves its structure from the 13th century, but it is surrounded by other buildings from the 16th century, such as the charming Pieve di San Miniato.
From Calamecca you reach some pleasant resorts which preserve suggestive remains of medieval castles and fortifications, such as Lanciole, which still features its original plant of the fortress, and Crespole which preserves the medieval castle which during the Renaissance became a privileged summer resort for noble families.
