PITEGLIO
Piteglio has preserved intact its charm as a small fortified
village which was built in the 11th century to control the valley
Valle del Lima. Old stone houses line the narrow streets which lead
up to the castle. In the main square of the village you find the
parish church Santa Maria Assunta, with a square-shaped bell-tower
which reveals its original function as a military watch-tower. Inside
the church you find a very curious relic, the holy milk of the Madonna
which according to the legend was brought to Piteglio from one of
the crusades.

| In
the small village of Piteglio you also find the Pieve della Santissima
Annunziata, raised around the 11th century and founded, according
to the legend, by Matilde of Canossa. Piteglio is surrounded by green
forests, which makes it a famous summer resort, with lots of great
cultural and folkloric events in the fresh summer nights. The valleys
around Piteglio feature several streams which can be used for rafting
or canoeing. |
