SAMBUCA PISTOIESE
At the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, Sambuca
Pistoiese is the meeting-point of two territories which, to being
divided in different administrations, preserve a continuity and
homogenous landscape, culture and history. A border village thus,
but also a melting-pot which witnesses the unification between the
two regions. The location of Sambuca Pistoiese, in the crossroads
between Emilia and Tuscany, have contributed to the building of
churches, monasteries and hostels which still preserve lots of interesting
remains.

Taking
the ancient roads, which still preserve the history of the pilgrims
and the thieves, is a special experience. The paths wind in this rare
and austere beauty of the landscape, plotted with architecture from
the past. The structure of the village has been preserved with stone
houses facing the kitchen-gardens with narrow streets leading to the
main square.
The centre of Sambuca is dominated by the ancient castle,
raised around the 11th century to control the strategic passes along
the border between Emilia and Tuscany. The imposing fortified castle
still preserves its military architecture and next to it you find
parts of the boundary wall. Close to Sambuca Runoiese you have to
visit the village of Torri, another important site for the defence
of the Pistoiese Mountain. Today Torri is a small and nice mountain
village, which features both medieval and modern buildings in the
old centre. During the summer the village celebrates several cultural
and folkloristic events which animate the visitors. |
