ARCIDOSSO
Arcidosso mbraces the whole hill where it is located, with
houses lined up to the top, which is dominated by the castle. At
the foot of the hill you can see thick chestnut and beech forests
which almost reach the gate of the powerful medieval walls which
protect one of the most characteristic and fascinating villages
of the Amiata.

| In
the heart of the old village you find the ancient church Sant'Andrea,
mentioned already in 1118, and the Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie,
which hosts a Madonna col Bambino from the 15th century. Do not miss
the Rocca Aldobrandesca, from where you have a marvellous view. The
Aldobrandesco family lived and governed Arcidosso until 1331, when
the Sienese Catain Guidoriccio da Fogliano occupied the village. Arcidosso
remained Sienese until the arrival of the Medici family who made it
the administration centre of the Amiata. In the modern part of the
village you might stop at the unique iron fountain, made in the 19th
century by the Foundry of the Grand Duchy of Follonica. It was first
located in the square Piazza Dante in Grosseto and then transferred
to Arcidosso. In the surroundings you can visit the Capuchin convent
and the Pieve di Santa Maria at Lamulas, raised in 1268 on the ruins
of a already existing building. |
