CASTEL DEL PIANO
Castel del Piano is located in the middle of the Amiata forest
at 632 metres. An ancient Etruscan settlement, the village is today
one of the most equipped resorts of the Amiata mountain to host
tourists and offers a vast range of services. The medieval centre
is situated around the castle and you can visit the Torre dell'Oroglio
(the Clock Tower), the Palazzo Pretorio with the nearby the Loggia
del Mercato and the Romanesque church of San Leonardo.

| The
modern centre of Castel del Piano, next to the medieval one, was completely
restructured at the beginning of the 20th century, when the avenues
and squares lined with trees were built. In the main square Piazza
della Madonna you find the Baroque church called Opera, where there
are interesting religious artworks, but the most beloved square by
the locals is Piazza Garibaldi where, every year, the 8th of September
at 6 p.m., the village celebrates the Palio race. The race dates back
to 1771 and the four quarters of the village, Borgo, Storte, Poggio
and Monumento, contend the trophy. |
