CASTELL'AZZARA
Located at about 800 metres, CastellAzzara is situated
at the east slopes of the Monte Civitella and is the highest municipality
of Amiata. It is located above the Paglia valley and dominates a
vast view of great beauty. The dominating location over the surrounding
hills is the main attraction as there is not much left of the ancient
castle from the Middle Ages.

The
boundary wall was incorporated in the newer buildings and the castle
on the top of the village was modified in modern times. There are
some ruins left of the Rocca Silvana, along the road to Selvana. The
Castle is surrounded by fortified walls though there are only partly
preserved, as well as the tower and the palace.
A very interesting building in the Amita area is the Villa
Sforzesca, built in 1576 by the Cardinal Alessandro Sforza to host
Pope Gregory XIII. The building is majestic and elegant, protected
by walls and embellished with frescoes which illustrate the landscape
and the idyllic countryside. In the old centre of CastellAzzara
you find the Oratorio della Madonna del Rosario and the Chiesa di
San Niccolò, modified in the 19th and 20th century.
