SEMPRONIANO
Ancient village of the Roman family Gracchi, Semproniano
retains its characteristic medieval centre dominated by the remains
of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. As the nearby Roccalbegna, Semproniano
is situated in a very harsh and wild landscape, with forests and
rock spurs just over the throat of the Albegna.

|
Semproniano
presents an austere and lonely fascination and was the stronghold
of the Aldobradeschi family until it was conquered by Siena in 1410,
after the destruction of the boundary wall. There are not much traces
of the Aldobrandesco castle, but you should visit the nearby church
of Santa Croce, which houses a wooden crucifix venerated by the locals.
Also see the oratory San Rocco from the 16th century and the
sober Romanesque church Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio. Along the road
which connects Semproniano and Roccalbegna you find the WWF oasis
where the organisation is trying to reintroduce the "capovaccaio",
a small and elegant Italian vulture which is almost extinguished.
Continuing the same road you reach Rocchette di Fazio, a small charming
village of the Maremma, with a well-preserved historical centre dominated
by the Rocca Aldobrandesca on the top. |
